A hogshead is a very large barrel, the old wooden kind, used to hold beer — and in the past, wine or other drink too. The word can mean the barrel itself, or the amount of liquid that fits inside it. You will meet it in history, in stories about ships and pubs, and sometimes on drink labels; you will almost never hear someone in a shop today ask for “a hogshead.” It is a heavy, old trade word. Though actually, the size was never as tidy as a school book makes it sound: different and different countries used slightly different amounts, but it was always a big , not a small keg. The name looks like “hog’s head” (a pig’s head), and that is how the spelling grew, but nobody is sure why a barrel was called that — it may be because of the shape.
