    In British English, the hob is the flat top of a — the part with the rings or hot plates where you put the pans. You put the kettle on the hob, turn the hob down, or wipe the hob after cooking. A British '' is often the whole unit: hob on top, oven underneath, so hob means only the top, not the oven. There are gas hobs, electric hobs, and induction hobs. This is ordinary kitchen English in Britain. Americans almost never say it; they say stove, stovetop, or burners. If you use hob with an American, they may stare. Older houses also had a hob as a shelf beside an open fire, where you kept a kettle warm — same broad idea of a hot standing-place — but the -top is the meaning you will meet now. Informal at home; also on the labels in British shops. Not a hobbit, and not the hub of a wheel, though hob and hub are old cousins.
