A hoax is a trick where someone makes people believe something that isn't true - like a fake news story, a fake bomb warning, or a made-up creature caught on camera. The point of a hoax is usually to fool people, sometimes as a joke, sometimes to cause fear or get attention. When you find out something was 'a hoax', it means: it wasn't real, someone made it up on purpose.

組成Many word books say 'hoax' probably comes from 'hocus', the word inside 'hocus-pocus' - the nonsense phrase magicians used to say while doing a trick. Nobody is fully certain, though.
