A hoarder is a person who hoards: they collect and keep large amounts of things — food, money, newspapers, clothes, bags, old boxes — especially when they do not really need them, and often when they cannot bear to throw anything away. The doing is hoard; the person is the hoarder. People use the word loosely. Buying extra rice before a typhoon is up for a reason, not hoarding. A hoarder keeps going past what is useful, and the pile takes over. Friends may laugh 'I'm such a hoarder' about keeping too many bags; doctors mean something heavier when they talk about hoarding as an illness, when the keeping of stuff crowds out a home and a life. That joke use is common and a bit if the person is actually , so be gentle. A hoarder is not the same as a collector: a collector chooses and arranges; a hoarder piles and cannot let go. The word leans negative in everyday talk.
