Hispaniola is a large island in the Caribbean Sea, east of Cuba. Two countries share it: Haiti on the west and the Dominican Republic on the east. Older books sometimes call the whole island Santo Domingo, which is awkward, because Santo Domingo is also the capital city of the Dominican Republic today. Columbus reached the island in 1492, and the Spanish named it the Spanish Island. The Latin name Hispaniola is a smaller form of Hispania, which meant Spain. Though actually the island is one piece of land; the line between Haiti and the Dominican Republic is a later political line, not a split in the rock. Always write a capital H. Say the island of Hispaniola when you mean the land, and the country names when you mean the states.
