If a person is hirsute, they have a lot of hair on the body and face — a thick beard, hair on the chest and arms, that kind of hair. It is a high, slightly smiling word. In ordinary talk people say hairy. Writers and doctors reach for hirsute because it sounds exact and a bit Latin. It is about hair that shows on the skin, not about long hair on the head. A man with little hair on top can still be hirsute if his beard and chest are thick. Used of a woman it can sound , as if her body hair were a problem. You may also see it of animals. It does not by itself praise or insult; the rest of the sentence does that work. It is not a word you need in the shop; it is a word you meet in books.
