Hiroshima is a city in western Japan, on the main island. In August 1945, near the end of World War II, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on it — the first time that kind of bomb was used on a city of people. Very many people died that day, and more died later from burns and from the leftover poison of the bomb, which you cannot see. The city was built again after the war and is once more a large city with factories and offices. Visitors often walk in the peace park and the museum there. In English, people sometimes say Hiroshima to mean that bombing, not only the place on the map. Write it with a capital H. It is a city's name. Use it with care; it is not a light word for any bad day.
