Hippocrates was a doctor in ancient Greece who lived about 2,400 years ago. Later doctors treated him as the person who began careful medicine: watch the sick person, write down what you see, try to help, rather than only pray. People still call him the father of medicine. Though actually the tidy story is tidier than what we really have. The years for his birth and death are guesses, and some books with his name were probably written by other doctors in his school, not by him alone. What students meet first is the Hippocratic Oath, a promise some new doctors speak about not harming the patient. The old oath has lines we no longer keep; today's version is a later . Write the name with a capital H. It is one man's name, not a kind of animal, even though it starts with Hippo-.
