The Hindenburg was a huge German — a flying ship filled with gas — that caught fire as it came in to land in New Jersey, USA, in 1937, after crossing the Atlantic. The disaster was filmed, and a radio cry of shock made it famous around the world. Though actually, a tidy line that says every passenger and crew member died is not true: many people were killed, but a number on board survived. After this, businesses largely stopped using to carry people in that grand way. The ship was named after Paul von Hindenburg, a German general and president, but when English speakers say “the Hindenburg,” they almost always mean this , not the man.
