    Hillwalking is the activity of walking on hills because you enjoy it. It is a strongly British word. In the United States people usually say hiking. Think of a full day on foot, up and down high ground, with a map and a packed lunch — closer to 健行 than to climbing a famous peak with ropes. You do not need ice axes for ordinary hillwalking, though British hill weather can turn nasty, and people do get cold or lost. Clubs, , and “collecting” certain peaks (especially in Scotland) sit inside this culture. The word feels outdoorsy and everyday, not stiff or academic.
