A hijab is a piece of cloth that some Muslim women wear to cover the hair and the neck, with the face left open. English borrowed the word from Arabic ḥijāb, a veil or covering. It is a normal, respectful name for that . Not every Muslim woman wears one; it depends on country, family, and her own choice. Though actually, students often mix it up with a , which covers the face, or a , which covers the body as well. Hijab, in the sense you meet in class, is the cloth on the head and neck. Some speakers also use hijab for the wider idea of dressing , but the thing you can hold in your hands is the scarf.
