If language or behaviour is highfalutin, it tries to sound grand, educated, or important, but it comes across as silly or fake. You use it to show you are not impressed. It is informal, a little old-fashioned, more American than British, and always a bit — though people often say it with a smile. Highfalutin talk is full of big words when simple ones would do. You may also see highfaluting, or hifalutin. Though actually, nobody is sure where the word came from: it may be a playful twist on high-fluting, or on high-flying / high-flighting, and it shows up in American writing around 1839. Treat that origin as a guess, not a fact.
