Of the best quality within a range — where things of that kind are officially sorted into levels, this one is near the top. That is the flavour that separates it from ordinary praise: it belongs with materials and goods that really are sorted and tested, so you meet it most with steel, oil, coal, ore, paper, cotton, beef, tea, and with machine or laboratory equipment. It is a plain, factual, technical-sounding word rather than a warm one; a shop selling says 'luxury', but a factory buying metal says 'high-grade'. Its opposite is 'low-grade', which is used just as often. There is a second, medical use that surprises : doctors say 'high-grade' about a or an infection to mean serious and fast-growing — good quality is not the point there at all, only the level on a scale. And in some countries 'grade' also means a school mark or a school year, so read the situation before you decide which grade is meant.
