At the expensive, better-quality end of a range of similar products. It compares one thing against others of the same type: a high-end phone is expensive and good compared with other phones, a high-end restaurant compared with other restaurants. The picture behind the word is a line of goods laid out from cheap to expensive, and this one sits at the top end. It is business and shopping language — shops, reviews, and news reports use it constantly — and it sounds modern and neutral, not . Its opposite, 'low-end' or 'budget', is used the same way. It is used about products, services, shops, and neighbourhoods; it is not normally used about a person. One useful thing about it: because it is a comparison, it never fixes a price. A high-end bicycle and a high-end car cost wildly different amounts. It just means 'the dear one, of this kind'. You may also meet 'top-end' with almost the same meaning, and 'high-end' sometimes stretches to mean 'the most powerful or advanced', as in high-end computers used for film work.
