Hickory is a North American tree, and it is also the wood that comes from that tree. The tree makes hard nuts that people and animals eat. The wood is strong, good for tools and furniture, and famous for the sweet smoke it gives when you cook over it — that hickory flavour on some barbecue is the wood, not a sauce by itself. So when someone says hickory, they may mean the living tree, a piece of wood, or that smoky taste. It looks a little like on the page, but it is not related. One is a tree; the other is an insult.

組成English shortened an older name, pockerchicory (also written pokickery or pohickery), from the Powhatan word pawcohiccora, the name of a food made from the nuts.
