A hick is a rude word for someone from the countryside. The speaker is not simply saying where the person lives. They are saying the person is , behind the times, or simple in a way the speaker looks down on. It is mainly American, informal, and . You will hear it in films and jokes; you should not use it about a real person in front of you. People also stick it on places: a hick town is a small place they want you to think of as unsophisticated. Though actually, the insult is often lazy. Plenty of country people are sharp, and plenty of city people are not. The word names a prejudice more than a fact.
