An HGV is a very large road vehicle built to carry goods — the kind of huge you see on a , not a van you could park at a house. The letters are British English, from Heavy Goods Vehicle, and they turn up on licences, road signs, and news reports: you need an HGV licence to drive one. In everyday British talk people also say ; HGV sounds a bit more official. In American English this is just a truck; Americans almost never say HGV. Though actually, “heavy” here is a legal size-and-weight class, not a feeling that the truck looks heavy. A who only knows truck will still understand the machine; HGV is the British name for it.
