Heuristics is the study of how people use what they already know — their experience — to find answers or to do better, without checking every possible path. A single shortcut of that kind is a heuristic: a rough rule that is often good enough, like “if the milk smells sour, do not drink it.” You meet the word in psychology (the quick tricks our minds use), in teaching, and in computer work (a program that hunts for a fair answer when a perfect one would take too long). Though actually, everyday English almost never says heuristics outside class, tech, or research; in the street people say a rule of thumb or a guess based on experience. The final s is part of the usual name for the idea, like mathematics — it does not always mean “more than one heuristic,” though it can.
