A herring is a long, thin, silver fish that lives in the sea in huge groups. People eat it fresh, pickled, smoked, or salted. For hundreds of years it was cheap everyday food in northern Europe, so the word feels plain and practical — a food-and-nature word, not a fancy one. Though actually, English also uses red herring for something that sends you the wrong way in a story or an argument. That saying comes from old tricks with strong-smelling smoked fish; it is not a recipe. The animal itself is just the silver sea fish.

組成From Old English. Beyond that, nobody is sure. One guess is that it is linked to hair, because the fish's thin bones look a bit like hair — but that is only a guess. Dutch haring and German Hering are cousin words. French hareng was borrowed from Germanic.
