Herpes is a very easy-to-catch virus that causes sore spots on the skin. The two places hear about most are the lips and the sexual organs. On the lips it is the cold sore many people get when they are tired or ill — though actually a huge number of adults carry that virus, and it is not a moral failing. The other common kind is passed on by sexual contact. The sores can go away and then come back, because the virus stays in the body. It is a medical word; doctors and health class use it. People also lower their voices, because they feel shy. Kind truth: it is common, it spreads by close contact, and you should not use the word as a joke or a judgment.
組成From Latin herpēs, from Greek hérpēs, literally 'a creeping'. That comes from a verb meaning 'to creep' — because the sores seem to creep across the skin.
