Hermetic means closed so tightly that air cannot get in or out. A hermetic jar, box, or machine part keeps the inside separate from the room: no air, and often no water or dust either. You will hear this most in science, factories, and on food or medicine packs. In real talk the set phrase is sealed. People also stretch it a little to mean “shut off from everyone outside”, like a small group that never explains itself. The tidy picture is a perfect seal. The word does not come from hermit (a person who lives alone). It comes from an old story about Trismegistus, who could seal a treasure chest with magic. There is an older, use too — “Hermetic” writings, secret wisdom — but on a packet in a shop it just means air cannot get through.
組成From Medieval Latin hermeticus, an irregular derivation of Hermes Trismegistus, the god and legendary alchemist said to possess a magic ability to seal treasure chests so that nothing could get at their contents.
