Herbivorous is the describing word for the same idea as herbivore: a herbivorous animal is one that lives on plants. “Koalas are herbivorous.” You will see it in textbooks more than in speech; in talk people often just say “it eats plants,” or they use the noun. The ending -ous turns the Latin “plant-devouring” idea into an English adjective. Though actually, writers sometimes stretch it to people (“a herbivorous diet”) when they mean a plant-based diet. That is playful or , not the core science use, but you will meet it. Same gentle warning as with the noun: “herbivorous” is about the usual menu, not a promise that the animal has never touched anything but leaves.
