In Greek mythology, Hera is the goddess of women and of marriage. She is queen of the gods and the wife of Zeus. The stories often show her as proud and jealous, because Zeus loved many others. So she is not only a gentle “goddess of wives”; she is also the one who guards the honour of the marriage and punishes people who break it. The Romans told her story under another name, Juno. In English, Hera belongs to myth, art, and school. Juno turns up in the same places. The name came into English from Latin Hēra, from Ancient Greek Ἥρᾱ. What that Greek name first meant is not something we should guess at here.
