You can think of her as a small pointing word that aims back at one female who has already come up — she's known, and now you refer to her again. The same pointing splits two ways : 'her' as the object you point at (I saw her) and 'her' marking what belongs to her (her book). An old-fashioned use stretches the same female pointing onto countries and ships.
