Hemlock is a very poisonous plant, and also the poison made from it. The plant can look a little like parsley or wild carrot — tall stem, clusters of small white flowers — which is exactly why it is dangerous: a person can mistake it for food. Even a small amount can stop the body from breathing. The most famous story is that , the Greek teacher, was made to drink hemlock as a death sentence. Though actually, English also uses hemlock for a North American tree that is not poisonous; a hemlock forest in the United States is talking about that tree, not the killer plant. The plant-name comes from Old English, and where that older word came from is not certain. Scholars have guesses, but they remain guesses, so it is better to leave the far origin empty than to tell a neat story we cannot stand behind.
