The Hellespont is an old name for the : a thin strip of sea between Europe and the west of today’s Turkey, near ancient Troy. In English you will meet it in myth and classical history — a young man swimming it at night, or a Persian king building a bridge of boats across it. Modern maps and news say the ; Hellespont sounds like an old story. Though actually, this name has nothing to do with hell. It also is not the same root as (“a Greek”), even though the letters look close: the Greek name is usually read as the sea of a girl called Helle, who in the old story fell into this water.
