A helix is a line that turns around a centre as it goes up or down, like a spring, a screw, or a staircase that climbs while it turns. DNA, the long code inside living things, is often shown as a double helix: two of these lines twisting together. Doctors also call the outer curved edge of the ear the helix. There is a much rarer verb, to helix, meaning to twist into this shape or to move in that climbing turn. Though actually, people often say spiral for both a flat coil and this climbing shape; a true helix keeps rising or falling as it turns, like a screw. It is not the same picture as a circle lying flat.
