Helium is a gas helium 是一種氣體, lighter than air比空氣輕, so所以 a balloon filled with it rises裝了它的氣球會往上飄。 Scientists write it He科學家把它寫成 He。

It does not burn, which is why party balloons use it; another light gas, hydrogen, can catch fire. A little helium in your mouth makes your voice go thin and high for a few seconds — though actually that is not safe to keep doing, and a teacher will tell you to stop.

It does not burn它不會燃燒, which is why party balloons use it這就是為什麼派對氣球會用它; another light gas, hydrogen, can catch fire另一種輕的氣體氫氣則會著火。 A little helium in your mouth嘴裡吸一點氦氣 makes your voice go thin and high for a few seconds會讓你的聲音在幾秒鐘內變得又細又高 — though actually不過事實上 that is not safe to keep doing一直這樣做並不安全, and而 a teacher will tell you to stop老師會叫你停下來。

In science work, very cold liquid helium is used to make big machines extra cold.

In science work在科學工作裡, very cold liquid helium很冷的液態氦 is used to make big machines extra cold用來讓大型機器變得格外冷。

People first thought this gas was in the sun, so the name was built from the old Greek word for the sun. They added -ium on the end. Though actually, chemists usually keep -ium for metals, and helium is not a metal. The man who probably named it, Norman Lockyer, was looking at the sun, and he did not follow the chemists’ usual rule.

People first thought this gas was in the sun人們一開始以為這種氣體存在於太陽裡, so所以 the name was built from the old Greek word for the sun這個名字是用古希臘文「太陽」這個字造出來的。 They added -ium on the end他們在字尾加上 -ium。 Though actually不過事實上, chemists usually keep -ium for metals化學家通常把 -ium 留給金屬用, and而 helium is not a metal氦並不是金屬。 The man who probably named it可能是命名這個字的人, Norman Lockyer諾曼·洛克耶, was looking at the sun當時正在觀察太陽, and而 he did not follow the chemists' usual rule並沒有遵照化學家通常的規則。

組成From New Latin helium, from Ancient Greek ἥλιος (hḗlios, “sun”), because people first thought it was in the sun’s atmosphere, plus the ending -ium. Probably coined by Norman Lockyer. The -ium ending is unusual here, because it is usually used only for metallic elements; Lockyer was an astronomer and likely did not follow the chemists’ usual rule.
