If something heightens a feeling or an effect, it makes that feeling or effect stronger. Fear can heighten; excitement can heighten; the tension in a room can heighten. The word is not mainly about how tall a thing is, though you will sometimes see it used that way too (heighten a wall, heighten a fence). With feelings, it is the everyday verb: news can heighten worry, music can heighten the mood, a sudden silence can heighten the drama. It is a little more formal than 'make stronger', so you meet it in stories, news, and school writing more than in chat. It works two ways: something heightens a feeling (a person or a thing does it), or the feeling heightens by itself (it just grows).
組成From Middle English heightenen, hyghtenen: height + -en (the verb ending that means 'make it so').
