The Hegira is the journey in AD 622 when the Prophet Muhammad left () and went to . He left because he and his followers were in danger. That move is the starting point of the Islamic calendar: year 1 is the year of the Hegira. English first took an old Latin spelling, Hegira; many writers now prefer Hijra, which sits closer to the Arabic. Use a capital letter when you mean this one event in history. Though actually, the Arabic word just means leaving home, an emigration — but in English class, Hegira almost always points to that 622 journey, not to any move.
