    If someone is heavy-handed, they take too much action — they come down hard when a lighter hand would do, and they often fail to think how other people will feel. A heavy-handed punishment for a small mistake; a heavy-handed new rule; a heavy-handed parent. It is not a compliment. You can also call a joke, a film, or an advertisement heavy-handed when it pushes the message too hard, with no lightness. And people sometimes use it for handling: too much salt, too much makeup — a heavy hand, no fine control. The everyday opposite idea is a light touch. Do not hear it as a note about the weight of someone's fingers; it is about force and feeling.
