Heartfelt means a feeling is real, strong, and comes from inside — not put on for show. We use it especially with thanks, apologies, sympathy, and wishes: heartfelt thanks, a heartfelt apology, heartfelt sympathy. Though actually, it is about sincerity, not about volume or tears. A quiet ‘I’m sorry’ can be heartfelt; a big loud speech might not be. People do stretch it a little, to a heartfelt performance or a heartfelt plea, still meaning ‘you can tell they mean it.’ You would not usually call food, a laugh, or a handshake heartfelt — that is hearty territory. Heartfelt is serious and true; it is at home in letters, speeches, and careful conversation, not in jokes.
