Heart-searching is when you look hard at your own feelings and at why you did something. You turn the light inward and ask, Was I honest? Did I do this for a good reason? After much heart-searching means you thought about it for a long time, and it was not easy. Though actually, soul-searching is the phrase many people use more often, with the same meaning. Heart-searching sounds a little more British, a little more like a book than like talk. It is not a doctor looking at your real heart; it is you looking at the part of you that cares and chooses.
heart-searching 是名詞，指仔細檢視自己的感受，並自問為什麼這樣做，例如我誠實嗎？我的理由是好的嗎？常見的句型是「after much heart-searching」，意思是經過很久的反覆思考，過程不輕鬆。很多人更常用意思相同、直譯為靈魂自省的說法。這個字聽起來比較英式，也比較偏書面，不太像日常口語。這裡的 heart 不是指心臟，而是指你在意與做選擇的那一部分。
