A hearse is the special large car that carries a dead person in a coffin at a funeral. It is usually long and dark, and it moves slowly with the family. Though actually, the word is much older than cars. It first named a triangular frame that held candles over a coffin. Before that it was the same word as a farm tool with many teeth, a harrow, from Old French herce. That farm-tool name probably came from an old word for wolf, because of all the teeth. Today almost nobody feels those older meanings; a hearse is simply the funeral car. It is a quiet, serious word. People do not use it as a joke around the family of the dead.
組成From Middle English herse / hers / herce, from Old French herce in the sense “triangular frame used to hold candles”. That was ultimately the same word as Old French herce, a harrow (a farm tool with many teeth), from Latin hirpex. The tool’s name comes from Oscan hirpus, “wolf”, because of the teeth. In English now the word does not split, and it no longer feels like a farm tool or a candle-frame.
