Health-care is the work of looking after people’s bodies and minds when they are ill, and of helping them stay well. It covers doctors, nurses, hospitals, clinics, medicine, and the systems that pay for all of this. Though actually, English cannot quite decide how to write it. Many people write health care as two words when they mean the thing itself, and health-care with a when it sits in front of another noun — health-care workers, health-care costs. A lot of people now smash it into one word, healthcare, and that is very common too. In the United States you will hear it in all the time, because who pays and who gets treated is a big public fight. In everyday talk it is a slightly grown-up word: you go to the doctor; the news talks about health-care. It is not the same as being healthy. Healthy is how you feel. Health-care is the help that is offered.
這個詞指照顧人們生病時的身體與心理，也幫助他們保持健康。它包括醫生、護理師、醫院、診所、藥物，以及支付這些費用的制度。語氣比較偏正式。
寫法不太統一。指這件事本身時，常寫成兩個字；放在另一個名詞前面時，用連字號，像 「health-care workers」（醫療人員）、「health-care costs」（醫療費用）。也有很多人寫成一個字。在美國，這個詞常出現在政治新聞中，因為誰來付錢、誰能就醫，是大家爭論的議題。它說的是提供的幫助，不是人的健康狀態。
組成health（身體、心理好不好）+ care（照顧）。可寫成 health-care、health care，或合成一個字 healthcare。
