A headword is one of the words a dictionary explains — the word printed large at the top of an entry, the one you went looking for. The meanings and examples under it all belong to that headword. Though actually, dictionaries do not all agree: some put ran under run; some give a phrase its own headword. sometimes think the headword is the first meaning; it is the word itself, not one of the senses. Teachers and dictionary-makers use this word. In ordinary talk people just say "the word" or "the entry."
