Headway means progress, especially progress that is slow or difficult — 'we're finally making headway' means things are finally starting to move forward after being stuck. It's most often used with the verb 'make': 'make headway.' There's also an older, physical meaning still used for ships and boats: the forward movement of a boat through water.
