A headstrong person is set on doing what they want, even when other people — sometimes people who care — advise them not to. Their will is strong, and they will not be steered. It sits close to stubborn, but with more push: not only refusing to move, but going forward anyway. The word is a little old and story-like, but people still use it, often about a child, a teenager, or a character in a book. It is not a compliment, though it can hide a little respect. Though actually, in ordinary talk many people would just say stubborn or ; headstrong is more colourful. It does not mean physically strong, and it does not mean clever.
組成From Middle English heedstrong, equivalent to head + strong. Head here is the will inside the mind; strong means that will is hard to turn.
