A headset is headphones you wear on your head, often with a microphone so you can talk as well as listen. People use them when they need their hands free — phone work, video calls, games. Though actually, shops and speakers are a little messy with the word. Some people call any big over-ear headphones a headset even when there is no mic; offices and call centres almost always mean the kind with a small microphone by the mouth. Gaming headsets are usually and cover the whole ear. It is an everyday word — not fancy, not slang.
