A heads-up is a short, friendly warning given before something happens, so the other person is not caught by surprise. Just a heads-up: the meeting might start early. It is informal, and very common in American work talk. It is not a long report — just a quick word in time. You will also hear Heads up! as a shout, when a ball is coming or something might hit you. That is the older, more literal use: lift your head and look. The noun a heads-up grew from that idea of warning someone in time. The -s stays on: it is a heads-up, not a head-up.
