1. 1

A headpiece is something you wear on your head, usually to look special, not to keep warm or to stay safe. Think of a dance show, a wedding, a play, or a festival: feathers, flowers, jewels, metal, or cloth sitting on the hair. It is not an everyday street hat, and it is not a helmet. People in fashion and costume talk use it when they mean 'the decorative thing on the head', even if that thing is quite simple. In ordinary talk, if it is clearly a hat or a crown, people often just say hat or crown.
