A headlamp is a lamp that lights the way from the front of the head — on a car, that is the bright light at the front; on a person, it is the small lamp you strap to your forehead so you can walk, cycle, or work in the dark. Many people also say headlight for the car, and keep headlamp for the one you wear, but the two words overlap a lot, especially in British English. It is an ordinary, practical word. Though actually, if someone says “turn on your headlamp,” you still have to look: car or forehead? The thing is the same idea either way — a lamp where the head is.
