A headboard is the board that stands up at the end of a bed where you put your pillow — the end by your head when you lie down. It can be plain wood, soft with padding, or tall and fancy. Some have a shelf, a light, or a place to plug in a phone. You can buy a bed with a headboard, or add one later. The other end of the bed is the footboard, though actually many beds today have a headboard and no footboard at all. In trucks, headboard can also mean a strong board at the front of a load, to stop things sliding forward — same picture, a board at the head. For everyday English, the bed is the sense you will meet.
