Sports and business news like this phrase: a final between two players, two brands selling the same thing. You can say they went head-to-head, or a head-to-head contest. It paints two heads pointed at each other, close up. Neutral, common in commentary. Though actually, it is about a direct match, not about using your head to think, and not about heads touching.
