Hawaii is a US state out in the Pacific Ocean, made of islands — eight main ones, plus smaller ones. People also say the Hawaiian Islands for the whole group. The capital is Honolulu, on the island of Oahu. It is the only US state that does not sit on the North American mainland, and the only one in the tropics. Holiday pictures show beaches and volcanoes, and that picture is real, but Hawaii is also a full state with cities, schools, and ordinary working life, not only a . In English the place is Hawaii; Hawaiian is the word for the people, the language, and things from there.
