A haversack is a bag you carry on your back, or sometimes slung over one shoulder. It is an older, slightly military or outdoor word: think of a soldier or a walker with a strong cloth bag, not a modern school backpack full of zips and pockets. In ordinary talk most people now just say backpack. You will still meet haversack in stories, history, and shops that like old-fashioned hiking words. It usually suggests something simple and tough, not fashionable.

組成From French havresac, from German Habersack, literally “oat-sack” (Hafer “oats” + Sack “sack”). Soldiers once carried oats for their horses in it.
