    Haughtiness is the proud, manner itself — the quality of looking down on people. If haughtily is how someone acts in a moment, haughtiness is the name of that pride. It can be a passing look or a whole way of being. Writers use it when they want to name the ice in a room: not simple confidence (which can be warm), but pride that pushes others away. It is a fairly formal noun; in speech people more often say pride, arrogance, or she’s so full of herself. Same family as haughty: the older French behind it, hautain, sits on haut, “high” — the picture is someone standing high and looking down. Today we just feel it as cold pride, not as height.
