A hatchery is a place people run so that eggs will hatch on purpose — most often fish eggs or chicken eggs. It is not a nest in a tree and not a quiet corner of a barn. It is a building, or a set of tanks and trays, where workers keep the eggs warm, wet, and safe, then raise the babies for a while. A fish hatchery puts young fish into rivers and lakes. A chicken hatchery sends day-old chicks out to farms. The word feels practical, a farm-and-industry word, not a poetic one. You can use it loosely for any organised hatching, but the live uses are fish and poultry. Though actually, this hatch is the egg verb, not the car door in and not the small axe hatchet, even though those words sit next to it on the page.
