A hatchback is a car whose back is one door that lifts up, window and all. You do not have a separate boot lid the way a saloon — in American English, a sedan — does. The whole rear wall opens, and the back seats can usually fold, so boxes and a week’s shopping slide straight in. It is an everyday word for a very common family car, a little informal, completely at home in ads and in ordinary talk. People stretch it a bit: some cars are called “crossover hatchbacks,” sitting between a small car and an SUV. In Britain hatchback is the normal word; Americans often just say hatch. Though actually, the hatch here is the opening or door — the same kind of hatch as on a ship — not baby birds coming out of eggs. Same spelling, different hatch.
