Hastings is a town on the southeast coast of England, by the sea in East Sussex. English speakers say HAY-stingz. meet it most often because of one day in 1066: the Battle of Hastings. William came from , beat King Harold, and England’s ruling line changed. When people say “the Battle of Hastings,” they mean that famous fight, not a small local quarrel. Hastings is also a family name. Some families took it from the town; some took it from an old Norman personal name, Hasten or Hastang. Later towns in other countries — there is one in New Zealand, and several in the United States — were named after the English town or after people with that family name. It is a name, written with a capital H, not a common noun you can have two of the way you have two chairs. Though actually, the town’s name is not from haste, even though the two words look .

The family name has two possible sources: from that place name, or a patronymic from the Anglo-Norman personal name Hasten(c) / Hastang. Later place names in other countries were named after people with that family name, or after the town in England.
